Mayor's Column The first Australia Day event at the Oberon Library and Community Centre was a great success. A crowd in excess of 230 were in the Function Room to be part of the celebration and see community members being publicly recognised for their achievements. It was probably the largest Australia Day crowd for a good few years. Elloura Nielson gave the Acknowledgement of Country, and I followed up with a short address about the nature of Australia Day and the Reflect, Respect, Celebrate, theme. Last Year's Citizen of the Year Kathy Sajowitz, unfurled the Australian Flag and everyone present to Hancox provided a beautiful lead for our National Anthem Our Australia Day Ambassador, Mr Peter McLean, gave his Australia Day Address which focused on the importance of the day and the nature of how we celebrate the event. Of course, a major reason for our Australia Day event is to recognise those people who have been nominated by the community for recognition of their work on behalf of the Community or their notable achievements. There was one late addition to the program which was Barry Richard Barry was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (ASM) in the Governor General's Australia Day Honours list for his 58 years of service in the RFS and in particular his dedication during the 2019 2020 fires and the protection of Caves House. Barry will be presented with the AFSM at a later date The other major awards were Citizen of the Year-Wayne Barker for his long-term support to local charities, sporting groups local schools and local businesses Young Citizen of the Year-Samuel Kavaleros for his efforts in supporting the Tigers, Can Assist and supporting the elderly during Covid Sportsperson of the-Jack Brien-Rowlandson for his work with the Oberon Rodeo Association and high achievements in bull riding Young Sportsperson of the Year-Max Meredith for his achievements in representing Australia in under 14 Bull Riding in the USA Sports Team of the Year-Oberon Under 10s Junior Hockey Team for stellar results in 2023 season after a disappointing 2022 season. Community Event of the Year-Oberon Tigers Can Assist Round for raising over $58,000 to assist members of our community batting cancer Volunteer Volunter Group of the Year - Live Better Community Transport Drivers for providing vital transport to those residents without access to private transport options Environmental Champions of the Year-Oberon Can Assist can collectors Peter Harvey and Don Miler for their ongoing efforts to recycle discarded cans and bottles. They donated almost $4300 to Can Assist through their recycling effort The Australia Day Working Party Special Award. Al the Australia Day Award nominees are eligible for this award.
