Mayor's Column Oberon is a finalist for the NSW Top Tourism Town Award in the small-town section. What a great outcome Voting by the public has now closed and the awards will be announced on 29 May at a function in Wagga. Regardless of the result there has already been a marked increase in publicity for our town. Congratulations to our hard working and talented team at the Visitor Information Centre and to the Oberon Business and Tourism Association for getting Oberon into the fina On Friday 10 May, the General Manager and I attended the Country Mayors Association Meeting on Financial Sustainability for Local Government. There were two presenters in particular who had some very interesting things to say. Professor Joseph Drew, a Professor of Local Government Economics, spoke quite passionately about the difficulties all Local Governments face in raising funds and dealing with grants (annual grants and specific purpose grants) Interestingly his view, backed by sold research, is that small rural Councils are the most efficient Councils-that's us The other interesting presentation was from the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (PART) Commissioner, Carmel Donnelly She spoke about IPART now being forward focused regarding rate pegging and recognising the extra costs involved in new compliance requirements or State Government cost shifting and applying those effects to individual councils Last week the final milestone in the Library and Community Centre project was completed. There were a number of minor items outstanding when the Library and Community Centre was opened last July and most of those were minor warranty issues. There were two significant items that were outstanding The first one was the audio-visual system for the auditorium which was installed in January and last week the "Operable Doors" were installed. These are folding partitions, at two fixed points in the auditorium, can quickly and easily divide the auditorium into up to three separate spaces. This provides great flexibility in how this space can be used and makes the Library and Community Centre even better! This coming Saturday 18 May is the 80th Anniversary Cocktail Party of the Oberon Hospital Auxiliary at the RSL from 4.00 to 7.00. The theme dress is an item from an Op Shop. was formed in tably touched most people who have lived in the Oberon district since it The Auxiliary has raised funds over all of those 80 years to provide medical equipment and devices that were not provided by the health department. This includes items such as modem beds and storage space for the emergency department, an ambulatory chair, a vein finder, and a bladder scanner. All of these items were important and improved the service available and in many cases reduced the need to travel to Bathurst or elsewhere for treatment The Auxillary is not just about medical devices. They have raised funds and installed blinds and curtain amongst other things to improve the appearance and amenity of the hospital for the benefit of staff and patients. The Oberon Hospital Auxiliary is an institution which has served the community since 1944 and will continue to serve. If you live in our district, you have likely benefited from their efforts. Come along to the RSL on Saturday to show you appreciation for a great organisation Tickets $25 with payment via BSB 082 771 A/c 509855909 with your full name as reference or call Rhonda Boyce 0427 239 260. Mayor Mark Kellam HAVE YOUR SAY OBERON MORE THAN YOU IMAGINE OBERON COUNCIL Public Notice PREVENT FROZEN WATER METERS AND PIPES 008350 Some water meters & pipes sit above ground and may be vulnerable to the cold. Water sitting inside meters and pipes can freeze. This will result in your property having no water and can lead to damage such as broken and split pipes. If the temperature is forecast to drop below zero, cover your meter to trap the air around it and stop the water inside from freezing. Regular household items such as blankets and buckets can be used. Make sure the items can be easily removed in case our meter readers need to access your meter.
