Mayor's Column Last Thursday, 11 July, there was a quite moving sunset ceremony at the Oberon RSL Sub Branch to commemorate those men and women who served and died in what is known as the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO). This area covers operations undertaken by the ADF between of the in the Arabian 2001 and 2021 in Iraq and other areas of t (Persian) Gulf and in Afghanistan. This observance was an initiative of the NSW State branch of the RSL and I congratulate them on taking this initiative. The ceremony included a powerful and heartfelt personal story from one veteran and a commemorative address from another veteran. The ceremony commemorated the 40,000 ADF members who served in the two wars, the 41 soldiers who died in Afghanistan, those who returned wounded or suffering from PTSD or other mental health problems. Those who have tragically died by suicide since their retum from the MEAO were also remembered. I hope that this commemoration will become a fixture in the RSL calendar in NSW and eventually nationally. Lest We Forget. The Oberon Council is planning a Community Service Expo on Thursday 15" August at the Oberon Library and Community Centre from 4.00pm to 7.00pm. This is a free event and will include a BBQ and light refreshments. The Expo aims to showcase the array of services available in Oberon including recreational opportunities, enthusiast groups, support groups, health care organisations, service organisations, museums, aged care facilities and operations and NDIS providers. In fact we want to ensure any group, organisation or individual that provide a community service is represented at the Expo. The audience for this event is all current or prospective residents and the aim is to provide everyone with a better understanding of what community services are available and be able to talk to those service providers.
