Mayor's Column ANZAC Day is wonderfully unique. Nowhere else in the world do people in almost every town and city gather before dawn to commemorate an event that happened half a world away. Some people have a direct family connection to that event or some other war time event, but most do not. But we gather before dawn year on year on year. These gathering are sombre and reflective, almost sacred. are bands but it is not a celebration. There is no glitz attached to this parade. The streets are lined with people, and they clap to pay their respects to those who are marching ANZAC Day is unique. It is a tradition that is very much at the heart of our culture and the day, and its events, are owned by our people. Cherish the Day On Tuesday there was an extraordinary Council Meeting to review the draft budget for the Financial Year 2024/25. Some key highlights of the proposed budget are The new rating arrangements that do away with the Town Improvement Levy and replace it with an increase in the general rate across the whole LGA has been implemented A significant amount of that rate will be applied to road maintenance across the LGA for next financial year in line with feedback from the last community survey There is a small deficit pess than 0.3% of the budgeted expenditure A number of the large road and other grant funded projects have been completed which has substantially reduced overal planned expenditure for this coming year. All the papers associated with that budget have now been placed on exhibition and anyone is able to make submissions regarding the budget. Written submissions can be emailed to Council@bern.nsw.gov.au mailed to PO Box 84, or hand delivered to the desk at the Administration Centre. The free Tip Day last Sunday was a huge success with over 300 separate loads delivered to the tip, this equates to around 33 vehicles per hour. The waste transfer stations at Black Springs and Burraga were also open on the day and were well attended. Youth Week began as a NSW Government initiative in 1980, and has since grown to be a celebration of young people in every state and teritory across the country. It is organised by young people, for young people, in communities across NSW and Australia. As part of the celebration Council organised an array of events at the Oberon Library and Community Centre in April. Some of the highlights included movie screenings, virtual reality gaming. board game sessions and food workshops. The program was joint funded by Council and the NSW Government Mayor Mark Kellam Council Meetings - May 2024 The Oberon Council Ordinary Meeting being held on Tuesday 21 May 2024 will be open to members of the public.
