Mayor's Column June is a particularly busy time for the Council and the June Ordinary Council Meeting is always large and complex as all the key financial documents need approval prior to implementation on July 1. In order to reduce the pressure on the June Ordinary Councill Meeting an Extraordinary Meeting of Council will be called on 11 June to deal with two significant items: the Development Application (DA) for the Oberon Sporting Complex Stage 2 and the potential Interim Heritage Listing of the Avenue of Trees in O'Connell The extraordinary Meeting will be held at the Council Chambers at 2.00 pm Tuesday 11 June. The meeting is open to the public and will be live streamed on Zoom and recorded. You may have noticed that the earthworks for the Oberon Sporting Complex are close to completion. Crossmuller, the contractor responsible for the earthworks, are about three weeks ahead of schedule and in order to reduce any potential delays in commencing stage 2 of the construction program the approval process for the DA for stage 2 will be dealt with at this Extraordinary Meeting. Stage 2 involves the construction of the clubhouse, grandstand and other facilities, amenities and infrastructure including roads and carparks. The Sporting Complex is due for completion in mid-2025. At our last Ordinary Meeting a report that was commissioned by Oberon Against Wind Towers was presented to Council arguing for an Interim Local Heritage Listing for the Avenue of Trees. Currently, the Avenue is protected by the O'Connell Urban Conservation Area which has been in place for 11 years. The protection inherent in a Conservation Area covers all significant building and landscapes in that area and it also encompasses all of the Avenue Of Trees. The report arguing for an Interim Local Heritage Listing was forwarded to the Heritage Committee, chaired by Councillor Trembath, for their analysis and consideration. The outcome of that Heritage Committee meeting will be considered by the full Council at the Extraordinary Meeting. Last week the Local Government NSW awards for the best Tourist Towns in NSW were presented at a tourism conference in Wagga. Oberon was one of 10 finalists in the Small Tourist Town (up to 5000 people). We didn't win but being in the final was a great honour and a reflection on the tourism potential of our LGA, its local attractions and the hard work and effectiveness of our dedicated Visitor Information Centre staff one of whom, Victoria Bewley, was at the conference and awards ceremony and did a wonderful job representing our LGA Mayor Mark Kellam Positions Vacant Council is seeking applications for the following positions: *Labourer- Town Maintenance Labourer - Cleaner Applications close Sunday 9 June 2024 at 4pm Oberon Library & Community Centre Manager Applications close Friday 14 June 2024 at 4pm.
