Mayor's Column On Sunday 7 July the NAIDOC Art Exhibition was opened at the Oberon Library and Community Centre with a good crowd of residents, artists and supporters on hand. The exhibition highlights indigenous artists from our local area and the nearby region. This is the second time that this event has been hosted and sponsored by the Council. This 2024 exhibition had more than double the entries of the 2023 event with more artists, a greater diversity in styles and a noticeable change in the overall quality of the entries. This event was very much driven by the Oberon Aboriginal Group with support from the local Arts Council and Arts Out West. Congratulations to the organisers and artists for such a successful exhibition. The exhibition is open to the public through to 18 July so spend some time viewing the wonderful art on display. Most items on display are available for purchase. A Candidate information event was held last Thursday for those interested in running for election as Councillors at the 14 September 2024 elections. The event was attended by seven prospective candidates and some current Councillors and key staff members. The intent of the session was to give prospective candidates a sense of what Councillors do, what the workload might be and the obligations of the role. There was discussion of the events leading up to the election and some advice on avoiding some pitfalls, particularly regarding nominations, was provided. Other items discussed were: A snapshot of how the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected and terms as well as selection of committee members, The structure of the Council and the responsibilities of Councillors, Council meetings and committees and how they work, Code of meeting Practice and Code of Conduct as it applies to Councillors, Budget and planning processes, Mandatory Financial disclosures and Related Party disclosures, Major projects which will still be in progress after the coming election, and What happens after the election. There were also lots of questions which were answered by Councillors and staff. There are no more formal presentations anticipated but if you, or someone you know, is interested in standing for election contact one of the Councillors or me and have a chat and get some answers to your questions. Contact details for all Councillors are on the Council website. Nominations for candidates close on Wednesday 14 August at 12.00 noon.
