Australians will be asked their say the establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strat The Voice would give advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect the lives of Indigenous Australian Why is the Voice necessary? It's hard to believe, but life expectancy, higher Aboriginal and Torres Strait suicide rates, higher infant Islander peoples are not mortality rates and worse recognised in our nation's educational outcomes than founding document. This non-Indigenous Australians wrong must be made right. The gap isn't closing, and The Voice provides that despite well intentioned recognition in a meaningful govemments, the current way. approach isn't working The aim of the Voice is to get better outcomes for Indigenous Australians by ensuring they have a say on We need to change it up. issues that affect them For example in housing, education. The Voice is about listening health and jobs. and getting positive, tangible outcomes in communities around Austraa Aboriginal and Tomes Strait Islander people have lower in the modem prosperous Australia of 2023, how can this be acceptable? But don't we already have Indigenous Parliamentarians? We do but ke governments, individual parlamentarians come and go, and they represent parties. The Voice would be independent and be above partisan party politics. Having it in the Constitution provides independence, consistency, and continuity Is the Voice legally and Constitutionally sound? Yes. It will be subject to the rules set for it by Parliament VOICE Q&A Why can't we put the rules of the Voice in the Constitution? Because our Constitution provides the broad framework for governing our country and we leave it to our elected representatives via the Parliament to pass legislation about details such as rules For example, in 1901 the Constitution gave the Australian Government the power to set up a High Court and other courts. It wasn't unel 1903 that Parliament established the High Court through legislation. Then in 1975 the Parliament set up the Family Court through legislation Another example is that in 1901 the Constitution gave the Commonwealth the power over currency but left it to the Parliament to work out things like what the notes are and what they look like.
