The fact that the candidate is a sitting member of the NSW Legislative Council (upper house) raises a couple important questions and actions the National Party must now take. Firstly, their candidate, Mr Farraway, must resign from the NSW Parliament. If you're being paid over $240,000 per year to represent the people of NSW full time, you can't campaign for a Federal seat at the NSW taxpayers' expense. A Federal election could be nine months away. Keeping your NSW salary while you're campaigning federally would be gaming the system. Secondly, the NSW Nationals must then immediately appoint a replacement to fill the NSW upper house vacancy that will be created by the resignation. If the National Party's plan is to leave the Upper House vacancy open so that their candidate can be parachuted back into the NSW Parliament if his Federal tilt doesn't work out, then this would also be gaming the system. How the National Party responds to these issues will be very telling. No wonder people get cynical about major parties. POLITICAL SHENANIGANS Another reason people get cynical with political parties is leadership shenanigans. Because something Mr Farraway doesn't appear to have done is support Paul Toole in last year's leadership contest for the NSW National Party. Paul was Sam's mate and mentor. But in a leadership spill where every single vote was crucial and Paul really needed him, Sam's support just doesn't seem to have been there. I spoke to Paul about this recently and I think Paul feels deeply betrayed. There's a reason you don't see Sam Farraway and Paul in photos together anymore. Politics can be an ugly game, and that leadership contest is a case in point. This ugliness is why the factions now running the National Party don't like people talking about what actually happened. CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY-CONGRATULATIONS, NARMATHA! Recently, it was a pleasure to join Oberon Council Mayor Mark Kellam in welcoming Dr. Narmatha Sivasenthan as our newest Australian citizen in the Central West! Narmatha has been part of the Oberon community for five years. She works as a General Practitioner at Oberon Medical Centre and is also on call at Oberon District Hospital. It was a joyous moment for her husband Sivasenthan and their children Cheliyan member of her family to gain citizen citizenship! To celebrate the occasion, Rotary President Sue Yates presented her with an Australian native shrub Also in attendance was Councillors Helen Hayden and Lauren Trembath Narmatha and her husband have made significant contributions to our community, especially in the health sector, and I'm thrilled to witness her becoming a citizen! Congratulations! BLACK SPRINGS MOBILE PHONE TOWER UPDATE he Black Springs small cell mobile phone tower saga continues. I have been working with Oberon Shire Council, Telstra and local residents for several years to find a solution to this long running issue. While Telstra has a government subsidy to install a small cell tower at Black Springs it is trying to get out of the contract by saying that it can't find a suitable site to host it. It is true that negotiations with some land holders have fallen through, but the reality is Telstra is also trying to walk away from the project. Oberon Shire Council has now offered up a small road reserve on Dog Rocks Road and I have informed the Minister for Communications and her office that this would be a suitable site. While I have been disappointed with the attitude of Telstra I will keep the community posted on what is a last throw of the dice for this vital project. I've had a lot of productive conversations and site visits around the district. While there are people for and against the proposal, my take on the situation is that the majority of local residents are either against it, or have serious reservations about it. There is genuine concern from residents who are potentially directly impacted. And Stromlo shopping around for locations outside of the state forest is an act of bad faith in my book, I've therefore decided that I won't be supporting it. The other thing I'd add is that one of the things that has come through the consultation process is the need to keep the debate respectful and civil.
