Tuesday 23 April was the last day NAB customers in Oberon could conduct in-person banking in town. The branch one of 11 regional branches to be axed by NAB before the end of the financial year, including at Lithgow, Cessnock, Moruya, Mullumbimby, Yass, Pittsworth Proserpine, Sarina, Jamestown and Bright is Disgracefully, the regional bank closures come at a time of sky-high profits, with NAB posted a profit of $7.731 billion in November 2023. Former NAB CEO Ross McEwan said at the time NAB is focused on delivering better outcomes for our customers and colleagues and this is serving our customers a and our bank well I think he mistook the word 'customers for shareholders, because just two be axing its Oberon and Lithgow months later, NAB announced it would shopfronts-two of 11 regional NAB branches to close by July. That eyewatering $7.7 billion profit was made possible by shutting branches in country areas that have supported the bank through the generations and made the bank what it is today. The big banks say that they're dosing branches because fewer people are using them, but we all know the truth they believe that they can make even greater profits by closing branches They downgrade services at branches and then walk away from the very communities who built them disgracefully betraying the trust of loyal and longstanding country customers. Devastatingly for people in the regions it just keeps on going To access face-to-face banking, NAB customers in Oberon will now be forced to complete a 90km to 100km round trip to Bathurst OBERON TARANA HERITAGE RAILWAY'S NEW RESTORATION JOB ARRIVES! It was terrific to catch up with Greg Bourne from the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway (OTHR) recently. The team has just taken delivery of a UFA1958 carriage, which they will fully restore and get back into service! Thanks to a $1.5 million Federal grant, the OTHR are about to reopen the rail line between Oberon and Hazelgrove which will be a massive tourist draw card for the region Well done Greg and the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway team! These bank closures are particularly hard on seniors, community groups and businesses who rely on in-person banking services In February, I met with NAS representatives at Parliament House in Canberra and asked them to reverse their decision to axe their Oberon and Lithgow branches. They flat out refused The only thing the big banks fear is government regulation and that's why Government needs to the Australian G get on with legislating minimum service requirements for banks in country areas. This is another sorry chapter in the shameful story of the big banks abandonment and betrayal of country Australia and their customers. AUTUMN COLOUR-GARDEN SHOWCASE WAS STUNNING! beron recently held their Autumn Colour -Garden Showcase! And, it was outstanding! Six of Oberon's most gorgeous gardens threw open their gates for locals and visitors to admire! I got the chance to have a wander through one of the beautiful gardens that was on display, belonging to David and Karen Carpenter. The dynamic gardening duo have i put 20 years of tender loving care into their garden, which features an amazing veggie patch. They even have plans for an arboretum in the future! The event raises much-need funds for the hospital Well done Oberon Garden Club MULTI-PURPOSE SPORTS AND COMMUNITY COMPLEX IS TAKING SHAPE! It's great to see work underway on Oberon's Multi-Purpose Sports and Community Complex! The dream of a new home for sportin Oberon is steadily taking shape.
