While there have been many sad and difficult days since- days of worry and stress, days of exhaustion there have also been days of joy as more milestones on the road to recovery are reached and passed I hope this Christmas will be one of them. Andrew Amid the joyous chaos of Christmas, filled with gatherings of friends and family, tractor loads of turkey, and swimming pools of pavlova, the summer holidays give us a chance to take stock of how far we have come in the past year. For the storm and flood-hit communities of Canowindra, Molong, Eugowra, Cudal, and Wellington, this Christmas will mark just over twelve months since that devastating day in November 2022. The pain of that time is still very It's a sad fact that more and more people are losing faith in our political institutions and political parties. Communities around Australia are becoming increasingly cynical about the way political parties operate and the tactics they use. What has happened to political vision and leadership? LOSING THE FAITH AS NATIONALS TURN BLIND EYE The sender's address on the package appeared to be fictitious and my family and I, including my children, were very shocked and concerned that our home was being targeted There was a time when political parties provided it. I think back to the days of war hero and former Member for Orange and Deputy Premier, Charlie Cutler. Look at Bathurst's Ben Chifley Contrast those days with what has been occurring in our area lately. It was great to catch up with Greg from Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway RECENTLY! Each week, the hard working and dedicated volunteers at the railway inch a little closer to getting the 24.3Km-long tourist track up and running once more. The crew recently reached a major milestone, completing t a two-year long restoration of carriages CBA850 and HLF854. After much toil, they're in tip top shape and joined at the hip once more. They've sure come up a treat! Amid the devastation of that time, and in the year since. stories of strength and courage, faith and friendship. and hope and community have helped our villages and towns get back on their feet. The determination of our country communities to come back and fight on has been unwavering. Sadly, this looks like the new politics. Whatever it takes, whatever the damage. If the home and family of a National Party MP had been subjected to this by an opposing party, the Nationals would have been demanding an immediate apology. resignation and expulsion of that person from that party. NEW IMMIGRATION LAWS The ongoing silence of the Nationals says so much about what that party has become. Is it any wonder that people are cynical? a government cannot indefinitely hold people in immigration detention if they have "no real prospect of being deported from Australia in the foreseeable future. The court said it's unconstitutional We know that a number of these detainees have serious criminal records and histories. After the ruling, 148 people were released from detention and six have since been arrested for various offences, with one being charged with two counts of indecent assault in South Australia. This is outrageous and shocking. The government's handling of this matter since the High Court ruling has been shambolic. As soon as the High Court decision came down, new legislation should have been ready to ensure that courts have the power to lock up those detainees that pose a threat to the community. Those laws have now finally been passed during a late-night sitting of Parliament last week. Due to the serious concern about this issue in the Calare electorate, I supported the new laws but believe they could have been made even stronger. These new laws are tragically too late.
