Merry Christmas Oberon QUESTION TIME DELIVERS NO ANSWERS ON THE GREAT WESTERN HIGHWAY ecently in Question Time, I asked the Minister for decision to cut funding to the critical upgrade of the Great Western Highway I asked: "the axing of over $2 billion in federal funding for the Great Western Highway upgrade is outrageous and disgraceful Traffic jams over the Great Dividing Range have become a way of life. You yourself said, It's a project that certainly is needed. Why have our communities been betrayed in this way? Will you reinstate this funding? Why haven't you or your office answered my written request for a meeting with you?" Disappointingly, the Minister spent the next few minutes dancing around my questions, instead of giving an open and honest answer to the many thousands of residents in our region and further west who are shocked and appalled by this ridiculous decision Instead, she refused to admit the truth; that the infrastructure pipeline in the Central West has become the government's piggy bank to smash open and help themselves to whenever they cry poor. In the 18 months since the Federal Labor Government came to power, more than $2.07 billion in announced funding for region-building projects has been robbed from our communities by the Minister for Infrastructure and a remorseless Federal Labor Government The question followed a speech I made recently in Parliament, in which I called out the Government's disgraceful and shocking out to the Great Western Highway upgrade. An extract of the speech is set out below. "Region-building projects require the foresight to see beyond what is and picture what could be-region building projects like the Great Western Highway upgrade, which would have helped bridge the great divide between city and country by strengthening the road system which connects them Devastatingly, the Federal Labor Government has proved time and time again that the vision of an Australia where country areas stand on equal footing with the city is not one they share. The repugnant decision to axe over $2 billion of funding and walk away from the Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow stinks of city favouritism. It's robbing the regions. It's a shameless and blatant burgling from the bush. It's spitting in the face of country communities which deserve a Great Western Highway that lives up to its name. The upgrade was more than just a road project; it was an opportunity to finally fix the passage over the Great Dividing Range, improving road accessibility from country to city sting regional transport, health and tourism outcomes. Infrastructure Australia termed the project a key enabler of regional development For regular updates and news, follow me on Facebook and Instagram @andrewgeecalare Axing this project shows that this government does not understand country communities and how important it is to improve key transport links between the city and the bush. This outrageous cut is a shameful episode in the history of regional Australia of Andrew GEE MP INDEPENDENT FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE RUNS ON THE BOARD FOR OBERON $ 4.8 million for Oberon's new Sports and Com munity complex $ 4.8 million for upgrades to Camp bell's River Road $ 3.95 million for upgrades to Arkstone Rd and Burraga Rd $ 1.9 million to support Central West forestry plan tations $ 1.65 million to extend the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway $ 852,010 to expand Oberon Children's Centre $ 762,000 for replacement of Abercromble River bridge $ 711,000 for the O'Connell Rec Ground and sur rounds $ 364,000 for new gym equipment at The Y fitness centre $ 217,866 for the Oberon District Museum 47 new mobile phone towers and base stations including Burraga and Black Springs $ 100,000 for new shades sails at Black Springs playground and the Common $ 50,000 for the Rotary Lookout at Falls Hill $ 50,000 for upgrades to the watering system and solar panels at Oberon Golf Club COOKIE CHARACTERS AT O'CONNELL clan of gingerbread folk Ahave set up camp in O'Connell for Christmas !
